Sunshine Action UK came together in 2021, with the goal of relieving poverty. Comprised solely of volunteers, with a major emphasis on developing a philanthropic mindset in the youth, we strive to ensure that everyone has access to basic necessities that the more fortunate of us often take for granted. We are an action-based organisation that strives to create a direct impact on low-income families and those experiencing homelessness. We want to do this by relieving burdens relating to a lack of essential material goods, i.e. food, sanitary products etc.

2008

Sunshine Action was originally founded in 2008 as a charity organisation based in Hong Kong, focusing on poverty-relief. Since then, Sunshine Action has partnered with over 900+ community centres and organisations across 24 countries, supporting over 400,000+ low-income individuals and families. The charity is fully composed of unpaid volunteers who operate it, and many secondary school students have become part of the network to lend a helping hand.

2021

Many students who volunteered for Sunshine Action in Hong Kong go on to further studies in the UK, and desire to continue conducting charitable deeds. Sunshine Action decides to expand its outreach officially to the UK by legally registering a charity here. This not only allows for continuation of support from volunteers in our network, but also enables us to help local communities within the UK in more depth. The charity applies for recognition. In the meantime, volunteers continue their work, making a measurable impact for those facing a cost of living crisis in the UK.

2023

Sunshine Action UK was officially constituted and recognised by the Charities Commission for England and Wales on 4 April 2023, laying the ground work for continued growth and impact.

PURPOSE

According to clause 3 of the Constitution, the object of Sunshine Action UK is:

The prevention and relief of poverty, in particular through the provision of material goods to the poor and homeless in England.

With that in mind, our motto is to ‘feed the hungry and warm the abandoned.’

OUR WORK

Our Fortune Bag programme is the cornerstone of our work. Sunshine Action UK creates and distributes ‘fortune bags’ which are filled with non-perishable food items and essential supplies, such as canned foods, biscuits, toiletries, and sanitary products etc. tailored to the needs of our target beneficiaries. We typically partner with local charities and organisations to determine the most useful items to include, and then distribute these bags to homeless and low-income individuals in local communities alongside our partner organisation. The contents of our fortune bags can sustain a person’s basic needs for a few weeks.

Selected Highlights from the Fortune Bag Programme

Feast With Us

This was our first event in the UK, where we packed 75 fortune bags containing food supplies such as canned soup, pasta, and hand gels to protect families from the Omicron outbreak. We also included chocolates to celebrate the Christmas festivity.

Tooting Community Kitchen

We packed 390 fortune bags, working with this organisation to distribute items alongside their food bank service.

St. John Evangelist Church Soup Kitchen

We packed and distributed 110 fortune bags, working with this church to complement their soup kitchen that targets rough sleepers and low-income individuals with minimal support.

INTERNS

During each summer, we offered internship programmes that invite students and young professionals to contribute to our charity’s purpose. We believe that bringing in fresh talent is essential for several reasons. New interns contribute innovative ideas, diverse perspectives, and up-to-date knowledge from their studies, all of which are invaluable as we grow and adapt to the evolving needs of our communities. In addition, they provide us with extra support to plan and organise charitable programmes. Finally, we believe that providing such opportunities will inspire the youth to continue conducting philanthropic activities of their own accord as a part of their daily lives.

We also have an ambassador programme, which you can learn more about here.
